My first circuit-bent instrument: Fisher-Price 1988 toy keyboard

I am very new to the world of circuit bending. This is my first attempt at gettin’ all bendy. Many thanks to Christopher Cprek (lvl1.org) for showing me how to do this and helping me along the way. I modified a Fisher-Price toy keyboard made in 1988. I picked this up in the late 1990s when I was collecting a lot of these kinds of toys at flea markets and such for use in my old band Blastic Pubble. This is one of the few that didn’t get purged over the years, and I was pleased to breathe new life into it. Fisher-Price is a division of the Quaker Oats Company.

Help Please! My Ekkie is driving me nuts :(?

Question by Kat: Help Please! My Ekkie is driving me nuts :(?
A few years ago we purchased a baby Eclectus. We think we made a mistake by giving him a child’s toy that makes sounds as you press the buttons. He loved it so we thought we did the right thing. All the other bird toys he wasn’t interested in but he obsessed on this and we wanted him to be happy. He would press the buttons all the time and listen with his ear by the speaker. Then he slowly started trying to imitate it and now for about a year its all he does. The sounds, the way he does them, remind me of a woman whailing or a puppy whimpering. I took the toy away but it didn’t help and for hours each day for 3-4 months he does these sounds sometimes stirring up my other birds to a room of screeching. I didn’t want to make him unhappy but I needed to do something I’m getting so frustrated! I totally don’t know what I’m doing. I read Sally’s book asked people at the bird place. I love animals and owned over 20 cats and dogs in my life but we’re at our wits end here. What do I do?
Most days I’ll see him on his perch just doing these sounds for 20 minutes straight, talon tucked in all comfy. He’s become very vocal recently but only these 2 sounds over and over for hours. I tried giving him the v tech cell that has talking, music etc and so many he can’t listen to only one figuring he won’t play one over and over to learn but hes not interested in any but his little toy with the 4 buttons in my drawer.. Can he be taught not to do these sounds? The only other he says for 2 1/2 years is hello.
I took his toy away months ago.

He has many toys in his cage that I switch out bi-weekly. But I read Ekkies tend to pick one favorite and they stick to it. Nothing like his button toy which he never parted from. We bought other sound toys but he never really touches them in his cage. Foraging toys, shredders, balls with bells, adding machine paper, sticks, wooden toys of all shapes and sizes, soft natural wooden toys. Smaller toys too because I read they like those. Most sit hanging and aren’t really touched.

good on you for seeking help. I think that the eculectus will keep mimicking the sounds until s/he gets tired of them! If the toy is driving you totally insane… just take it away but make sure you replace it with another toy…. maybe one that doesnt make noise? or less irritating ones anyay… give her plenty to do and within several weeks s/he should maybe forget about them and learn to talk instead. I hope that this was of some help to you.

Plucking feathers or moulting? Can I determine the answer from feathers in my cockatoo’s cage?

Question by lucindad1937: Plucking feathers or moulting? Can I determine the answer from feathers in my cockatoo’s cage?
Spring is probably moulting time but since I have had my rescued cockatoo for only a month, I am not certain if feathers he is losing are caused by plucking or moulting. There are 5 to 10 feathers at the bottom of the cage each day; none are flight or tail feathers but are downy or small rounded like those on his chest. There are no bare spots on his body or indications of mutilation. There is no blood in the shaft of the feathers and I have never seen him pluck a feather although he does a lot of grooming, particularly when he is sitting outside of his cage. He is eating well, is very quiet and murmurs softly except when he is left behind and he hears us talking elsewhere. He gets a daily spray shower, has lots of toys and attention and his blood work, according to the vet, is perfect. He gets at least 10 hours of darkness at night in a covered cage. Any information that you can share; plucking vs. moulting, would be appreciated.

that is too much to read but i would say it is moulting time and all the birds loose every one of their feathers and regrow new ones just not all at the same time!!

Do People Ever Outgrow the Joy of Toys?

Contrary to popular representations, toys are not, and have never been just the domain of children. In fact, toys have consistently captured the imagination of the general public and are the companions of adults just as much as they are a mainstay in the lives of children the world over. Of course, the main reason for the enduring nature of toys is difficult to pin down; however, their variety and constantly evolving appearance and selection means that the value of simple toys and games as a means by which children and adults can amuse themselves is unlikely to fall out of date.

Toys date back thousands of years in our history. For example, many toys, including small carts, bird-shaped whistles and toy monkeys were excavated from the ruins of the Indus Valley civilisation which dated from 3000 to 1500 BC. Children in Ancient Egypt often played with dolls made out of stone or pottery, with wigs and moveable limbs; while infants in Ancient Greek and Roman civilisations occupied themselves with bows and arrows, terracotta or wax dolls and early yo-yos.

As technology has developed, today’s toys are more likely to be made out of plastic or other synthetic materials. But even as the way toys are produced and what toys can do has advanced, the fact that children play with and can learn from toys has not altered. For example, many toys can aid a child’s cognitive development and help them identify shapes, textures and sizes. Puzzles can also help in the mental development of growing children or young adults, teaching them the basics of problem solving and sometimes even the principles of certain scientific concepts: for example, Newton’s Cradle is a desk toy that demonstrates the conversion of momentum and energy.

Toys occupy such a large place in the public’s imagination that films often represent toys – otherwise inanimate objects – as living beings. Movies like Disney’s Toy Story 1 and 2, and 1998′s Small Soldiers (in which missile technology is used to enhance toy action figures) portrays toys as being ‘alive’ and taking on a power and force all of their own. The success of these films demonstrates quite clearly that toys are an obsession not just of the young, but the old alike.

Today’s flourishing online trading forums means that toy enthusiasts will be able to find a range of toys and games online with which to buy and sell to a huge variety of users. In fact, many online marketplaces will provide an opportunity to find rare toys and games, as well as particular models that may no longer be manufactured. So toy fans should be sure to check out the vast world of opportunities that exists for them online: after all, toys will always be important – whether they’re for you or your child.

grow feather back on my Hahns Macaw?

Question by Ryan C: grow feather back on my Hahns Macaw?
I adopted a Hahns Macaw. He has great personality. I know that if i give him enough attention and lot of toys that well help. But is there any other suggestions

    Best answer:

    Answer by Bfids
If his bare spots are smooth there is a high Chance that the feather folicle is too damaged to regrow. If it is bumpy..like after you shave and you get bumps…then there is a chance he could regrow feathers.

Regular mistings and baths, lots of toys and interaction, Try red palm oil in food.
    Good luck
