I’m thinking about buying a parrot…..(read more)?
Question by Aidan T: I’m thinking about buying a parrot…..(read more)?
hey, im very keen to purchase a parrot. i like the idea of a african grey or a hanhs Macaw, but im pretty open minded for other suggestions that have worked for you or someone you know. i already have purchased a cage for him/her (the dimensions are H 36inches W 20.5 inches L 32inches. Those dimensions DO NOT include the legs of the cage btw)
ive figured i should have about £300-£400 to spend on this. due to my mother being a git, the cage/bird will have to be in my room, (note: i do spend most of my time in my bedroom anyways, and i am currently in the proceeding to ‘bird proof’ my room so he/she can be let out so spread her/his wings daily, and i have time to interact and bond with the parrot. My room is a fair size if that makes a difference as to which parrot would be best. I do have plans also i make some sort of play frame for him/her (basically a large series of branches with toys/swings/mirrors etc on it)
NOTE: i say i am planning these things, due to my mother saying i can only get it in september, so i am waiting til i know what kind of parrot im going to get before i research which materials/woods etc are a caugtion to the species i choose.
Thanks in advance
Aidan :)

Is this your first bird? If so, the best parrots to buy for a first time bird owner are budgies and cockatiels. They are not too expensive and are very easy to care for. They aren’t as demanding as the other bigger and more challenging parrots. Also parrots are very expensive, so if you wanted to buy an African grey parrot, you won’t have enough. African greys can cost around $ 1,000, and they are a little more difficult to handle. Having an African grey parrot is like having a 2 year old child for 50 years. Also a Hanhs macaw would be a good choice for you too. Some other parrot suggestions for you that aren’t too expensive, and are good for a first pet bird or for anyone who is willing to give them the proper care would be:
An Indian ring neck parakeet
Green cheek conure
Lovebirds
As long as you do a lot of research first and are willing to give them a long happy and healthy life, you can buy some of these parrots that I just suggested. Owning a parrot is a huge responsibility. Remember that they need to be out hours each day, they can be very loud, they are destructive, and they are demanding. Also since parrots are expensive and pet stores and breeders are really expensive, I recommend adopting a parrot since there are thousands of unwanted birds that need a new home. Also bird rescues and shelters care least about the money and most about the wellness of their birds so usually it’s not as expensive to adopt one there. I once adopted an african grey parrot for only $ 200, while they usually cost around $ 1,000! Just remember to do your research first with a few different species of parrots so you will know which one will be best for you. Also remember that owning a parrot is a very long term commitment because some parrots can live up to 80 years! Also since parrots are very expensive, you might go a little over your budget since buying perches and toys and food and vet visits can be expensive along with the parrot. Also, please take your parrot to the vet. You will need to take your parrot to the vet every 6 months and vet visits cost about $ 50-$ 100.

What do you think of this title for a photo?
Question by Daisie234: What do you think of this title for a photo?
I’m submitting a photograph to an organization to be shown/published. I’d like opinions on the title I’ve given it.
The photo is of a colorful parrot with its head turned down. It’s sitting on a perch with a toy hanging from a rope in front of it and a fence and path visible in the background, clearly not a natural environment.
The title is “I Know Why.”
Do you get the reference? Do you think it’s too serious for the photo? Do you have any other suggestions? The only other one I can come up with is “Parrot.” LOL.
Thank you for any input you have! It’s much appreciated.
Thanks for the answer. Do you know what poem I’m referring to with that title?
Basically, I’m worried that the photo doesn’t have deep enough meaning to carry a meaningful title.

Question on scarlet macaw diet? (10 points)?
Question by Kimulove: Question on scarlet macaw diet? (10 points)?
Can a macaw have millet spray OCCASIONALLY as a TREAT.
Also, Can a macaw have a dried corn cob to play with? He doesn’t eat it, he just breaks it up and throws it around as a toy.
Best answer:
Answer by La Vena
Millet is very small, so it wouldn’t be much of a treat, but you could give it to yours if he likes it. It won’t hurt him. I’m guessing that he doesn’t actually eat the millet, probably just chews it up? And yes, dried corn cob is fine to give to your Macaw. Macaws really like large in-shell nuts, which are good for them as a treat (almonds, filberts, brazil nuts). Of course the best main meal would be pellets.

Soundproofing my bird room?
Question by Karlie Chisholm: Soundproofing my bird room?
I am purchasing a Gold Capped Conure in June. I have $ 1000 saved up strictly for hanging toys, plants, and other stuff for my birds room. I have been planning/decorating since last May. I am having the cage built (72”x 60”x 42”) in my room. In other words, I know what I am getting into as far as screaming goes (and to be quite honest with you I actually like the conure scream -my friend owns two gold caps and I have listened to them <3- and will enjoy having an alarm clock in the morning) and the time needed with this type of bird. The only thing I am concerned about is my neighbors sanity when my bird decides its time for some vocal lessons and more attention =]. I know they won't mind the screaming but I do want to try and make it easier on them by soundproofing my room (where my bird will sleep and have his cage) and the bird play room (where another play cage and etc. will be located). I realize that I can not completely sound proof the two rooms and I know the screaming will still be heard no matter what. I can not do anything to the walls but I can hang things up. I have read about "Deluxe Wall Coverings" and etc. but I have no idea what I need and how thick of foam I need. I have also read that people use plants and comforters for soundproofing? I am already planning on getting a few safe/live plants for my bird so he/she can forage throughout his/her room and my room. Whats your opinion on the best/safest/cheapest way to sound proof a bird room? I like the "Deluxe Wall Coverings" but I do not know how effective they will be with my destructive, adventurous, vocal, loving conure. Any advice for what anyone has used in their bird room, any advice on "Deluxe Wall Coverings" for sound proofing, or any advice on whether or not the plant and comforter idea works would be awesome =].

A member on my forum used this product to soundproof his parrot’s sleep closet:
http://www.audimutesoundproofing.com/sound-absorber-soundproof-blanket.aspx
Here’s the post where he mentions the above products: http://www.anafricangrey.ca/forum/topic/14389-no-room-for-a-sleeping-room/page__view__findpost__p__95445
These blankets are not cheap, but they aren’t outrageous either. I may consider getting some myself for the dividing wall between our birdroom and the adjacent room.

It can depend on where you live, whether you want a green or a blue, and whether you want one that is handraised or not (which I really recommend if you want a pet)
In Australia, you can usually pick up a Quaker for $ 300-$ 400 depending on the colour, that is a handraised one. Aviary Quakers go for maybe $ 200 each.
In America, most of these parrots are much more common- just watch out, though- because they are illegal in about 13 states over there! So you may not be able to have one where you are.
I would expect a handreared Quaker will cost you somewhere between $ 200-$ 400

i make almost all the toys for my birds. anything with lots of rope, bells, wodden shapes, use your imagination. mine also like paper towl tubes! try to avoid mirrors, if you are planning to or do spend a lot of time with him. he may bond with the pretty little birdy in the mirror instead of with you!

New parrot cage questions and help?
Question by synchroswim: New parrot cage questions and help?
A while ago I received and email saying that if I wanted a bird cage .. A lady had it and would give it to me for free.. I became interested and started talking to her.. And today I brought it home..
It had been used fir about 15 years by her lovebird that died in December and she had no need for it any more..
It is a Hagen majestic cockatiel cage … 20x20x30
It is a little used has some cleaning needed.. But is this cage suitable for 1 lovebird?? I’m getting one in august and just doing a lot if research ahead if time… It also came with this which I anxiously love :
6 water/food dishes
About 10 perches wood/rope
3 t bar perches
A huge bird stand
Tons of leather toys and ladders
Lots of food
And a lot more
I thought this was a pretty good deal
Although the cage needs some cleaning .. Does anybody have any experience with this cage?
Is it suitable for a lovebird? I’m pretty sure the love will be out at least 3 hours a day so it will get it’s exercise.
Please answer and thank you .. Every bit of information is needed and wanted!!
