Amazon parrot being uncharacteristically loud lately?

Question by Kiwi is my bird-o: Amazon parrot being uncharacteristically loud lately?
Our amazon is home alone for 4-8 hours a day. He has a lot of toys, and has been on this routine for years. He always gets lots of love and attention in the mornings and after work. For the most part, he is a well behaved bird. But lately, he has been starting to excesivly scream when we are at home, even when we are giving him attention. He has also been lashing out at me, and sometimes even my husband (who he seems to have more respect for, always has). He has never done this before, and he is coming up on 12 years old (he is far past sexual maturity). There has been no major changes in his environment recently. He usually gets loud and nasty during matting season, which we put up with, but this has extended far longer than his usual 3 months of pissed-offness a year. We are not seeing what we are doing wrong here. He has had a consistent routine forever, lots of toys and mental stimulation, a nice roomy cage, plenty of attention and human time ect…. Were not getting where this is coming from, but it is driving us, and our neighbors nuts. Our neighbors have told us he is quiet while we are at work (when he is home all alone), yet the second we walk through the door or take off the cover in the morning, he starts screaming. We want this behavior to quit asap. We have worked hard to provide him with a good life, and do our absolute best to provide him with everything he needs physically and mentally. I’m thinking he may be lonely, as he has always been a single bird. I’m sure he realizes he is not a human, and has green feathers instead of skin. Getting him a buddy is absolutely out of the question. However, I did see a DVD at petsmart the other day that just loops playing scenes of parrots in the wild. I debated getting it, but am not sure if it would be a good idea, or if loneliness is even the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do?
And before people start going into mental stimulation, he has plenty. We rotate out his toys on Monday, wednesday, and Friday every week without fail. They may not be brand new toys all the time, but we’ve accumulated enough over the years, I’m sure he doesn’t recognize the toy that was in his cage 3 weeks ago. He also gets lots of foraging opportunities and stuff to shred (toilet paper tubes and cracker boxes type stuff), so he has plenty to stay busy all day when were away. And he also has the radio on all day for him.

Honestly, It sounds like you’re doing everything perfectly for your Amazon. What a lucky bird and I most sincerely mean it.

My Rainy is a 25 year old Blue-Fronted Amazon and oh lord, do I know how loud they can be! These guys are usually a one person bird, bonding and tolerating so much more, while still feeling quite fond of other household members. It could be that your bird may simply want and crave more attention from your husband…as you said, he’s the one the bird is more bonded to. I know when I’m busy and cannot always be with Rainy, he gets extremely loud, urgent and relentlessly calling to me. Even when I go and get him, he’s still complaining and flaring those eyes! He is quiet when he;’s busy watching animal planet or sees other birds outside from his window. He sits very attentively listening and doing this dance :) It helps entertain him so perhaps getting that tape or even leaving a radio on for your bird would be a positive thing. Leaving him for 4-8 hrs per day should not be a problem. You’ve given him everything to entertain himself and feel totally secure.

Just a thought….Have you by chance added a new pet to the family? Rainy gets very jealous of the cats but especially the dog. When they enter his space he becomes irate! Another thing that helps aside from the toys is a change in fruit and veggies. I always offer his favorites, but lately I’ve given him new things, even draping the romaine lettuce on the cage. He seems more satisified. I’m certain you know that making sure your parrot is getting a full night’s sleep, covered and in darkness is imperative. Without 8-10 hours….parrots are extremely loud and will just continue annoying you and everyone else with-in ear shot.

I would suggest going over any recent changes in your household. It’s amazing how much more birds are aware of things than we realize. Could be some little thing that’s causing the behavior.
If it continues, for peace of mind alone… I’d take him to the vet for a well visit that includes a gram negative just to make sure nothing is going on health wise.

Is it OK for Parrots to eat the wood hat is hanging on their toys ? Is their a better type of toy to buy. SHe is new to me I bought her a hanging teaser toy and she only chewed off the one wood block other wise she doesn’ touch it. What would be good to keep her entertained? Im still a little scared of her so I aavent tryed to pet her yet. I have only had her for a week. Thanks Michelle

Stop being scared, you will get bit if she thinks you are afarid of her. Amazons will chew thur wood toys fast tehy really don’t eat the wood. When you go to work turn on a TV it will help the bird.

The amazon parrot is a large green parrot that lives in South America and the Caribbean. They usually have accenting colors, depending on the type of species. Make sure you have lots of destructible toys for your amazon parrot to chew on throughout the day. Having these toys also stops them from becoming aggressive as they always have something to amuse themselves with.

It is important to realise that an amazon parrot requires more attention and care than any other domestic pet such as cats and dogs. It is recommended that before you buy an amazon parrot, you should first purchase a smaller bird that is easier to care for so you gain some valuable experience. Perhaps starting off with a budgerigar would be a good idea just until you have enough experience to handle a real amazon parrot.

An amazon parrot is a very serious animal and requires a lot of attention. Only experienced bird handlers have the ability to care for such magnificent creatures. This is the number one golden rule that all likely amazon parrot owners must abide by before owning these beautiful bird as pets.
