Does anyone know anything about zinc poisoning in birds?

    Category: Forum

Question by freswood: Does anyone know anything about zinc poisoning in birds?
My lorikeet has been having seizures. The vet has narrowed down the cause to either epilepsy or zinc poisoning, and the test results are coming back in a week. In the meantime, can you tell me all you know about it? Here are the facts:

    - he’s ~1 year old
    - I got him from another owner 2 months ago. He came with a cage (covered in enamel, but might be zinc).
    - Some of his toys have metallic parts. They are all specialised bird toys, so I assumed they would be safe.
    - His food bowls came with him. They look like they’ve been scoured down, and are magnetic. Could that the the cause?

It would be great if anyone could tell me how to distinguish between zinc and, say, aluminium. I don’t want to take all his toys away. Thanks for your help, this is so stressful and I’ve been very upset.

Managing Your Bird’s Dust–5 Useful Tips About Managing Bird Dust

Bird Dust can be a huge problem if you share your home with a powder down bird. Left unchecked this dust can be a health hazard for both birds and humans. Here are 5 answers that will help you deal with this dust more effectively.

What is bird dust? It is a powder (generally white) that certain birds produce to keep their feather soft and their skin properly moisturized. Producing this dust is something your bird will do for as long as it is alive. While sometimes you may thing it would be nice to be able to turn a bird dust switch to off, this would lead to numerous health problems for your bird. So all you can do is to find ways to reduce the amount in the air and on surfaces in the bird room and around your home.

How is dander different? Dander is microscopic in size and cannot be seen with the human eye. Dander is a natural way of replenishing old skin with new skin that is better able to protect the bird and ward off disease and infection. Dander production is also a lifetime process. So a powder down bird produces this dust in addition to dander.

Do all birds produce bird dust? While all birds produce dander, the short answer is no, only some produce dust. There are 3 types of parrots that are the most well known for the powder they produce, and they are the African Grey, Cockatoo, and Cockatiel.

Which birds produce it? The birds that produce it are generally known as powder down birds and include the African Grey (both the Congo and Timneh), Cockatoos, and Cockatiels-all members of the parrot family.

How can you reduce the amount of dust the bird spreads? Gently misting your bird with water using a spray bottle that you would use to soften wrinkles before ironing clothes is a very effective way to reduce the amount of dust that will go airborne. Always mist early enough in the day so that your bird is able to go through the night with dry feathers. They are less likely to become chilled as the temperature drops during the night.

How can you effectively reduce airborne dust? Since your bird’s normal activities of flying from one place to another both inside and out of the cage, preening it feathers, and playing with its toys are sure to put dust in the air constantly, the best way to reduce the number of airborne particulates is to filter the air.

Even though most household heating and air conditioning systems have filters, they are often no match for the incredible amount of powder these birds can generate. Using a portable air filter with a HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) filter is the best plan of action.

In addition to the HEPA filter, an air cleaner that contains multiple pre-filters and a filter of military carbon cloth will give you and your bird daily relief from particle-filled air. Keeping the air clean makes you and your bird less susceptible to respiratory diseases.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE MECHA REQUESTS!!! I will make videos of what I feel like! ——————– Soul Bird! ??????! The Soul Bird was an interesting toy in the Gaoranger line. It’s considered a mecha, but isn’t a Power Animal (???????). What it is, is actually a new cockpit for the mecha or Gaoranger. It features a platform for all five Gaoranger and features a cannon to produce the finishing attack. This set includes the base (which can attach to Gaolion), 5 Mini Gaoranger, and Piyochan (?????). It’s interesting to note that the Soul Bird can attach to pretty much any mecha combination as an alternate arm. This toy was never produced for the Power Rangers Wild Force Megazord line. I’m not enitrely sure it can attach to Wild Force Megazord or Kongazord…but I don’t see why not. Regardless, this is a Japan exclusive toy. Check out my Myspace Blog! Bird Allergy Solutions—5 Ways To Manage Allergies Caused By Pet Birds

Pet birds have become increasingly popular as pets. And with this popularity some people have developed or become aware of sensitivity to the dust, dander, feathers and other pollutants they create. Here are 5 ways you can manage your allergies and enjoy your pet bird too.

Choice of Bird—This is a “Johnny come lately” idea if you’re already adopted a bird. But if you are still in the process of choosing a bird this will help. All birds are not created equal in terms of the pollutants they create. All warm-blooded animals produced dander (dead skin flakes) and birds are no exception.

However, some birds create a white powder in addition to dander which increases the number of airborne pollutants exponentially. These powder down birds include African Greys, Cockatoos, Cockatiels, and Amazons. And while these birds are absolute gorgeous creatures, they will produce more particulates than other birds.

Number of Birds—-Keeping the numbers low will obviously reduce the number of particles produced. Because some birds are more social than others, your bird may have a higher quality of life if it is one of a pair. But having large numbers in captivity is sure to lead to problems for those who are allergic.

Easy to Clean Surfaces—-You can make cleaning so much easier by making smart choices about how your aviary is furnished. Tile, wood, and linoleum are all easier to clean than carpet and rugs.

Furniture that can be wiped down with a damp cloth will prevent particles that have fallen becoming airborne again. And blinds, shades, and shutters are easier to keep clean than draperies. These may seem like small choices but they make a big difference in keeping the air clearer and reducing the symptoms that result from allergies.

Clean Smarter—-When it’s time to clean, here are several things to keep in mind. Using damp mops and cloths for the floor, walls, and cage will trap more particles and send fewer into the air.

A vacuum that has a special bag to trap pollutants and prevent them from going airborne again is best. When it’s time to clean the cage, taking it outside and hosing it down will send particles in the outdoor air rather than the air inside your home.

Clean the Air—-Each time your bird flies from one perch to another, or tugs at a toy, or preens itself some particles will be released into the air. That’s just part of having a feathered friend as part of your life. The only way to keep airborne particle to a minimum is to filter the air.

The most effective type of cleaner for clearing particulates from the air is a HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) air purifier. It is able to remove particles down to.3 microns with a micron being defined as one millionth of a meter. And its efficiency is such that for every 10,000 airborne particles in the air, it will remove 99,997 of them with 99.97% efficiency.

The Biting Pet Bird – 6 Things to Do to Prevent Pet Birds From Biting

Pet birds can only continue to be good pets if they can live peaceably with humans and other pets. Preventing biting can save you the painful chore of having to find another home for your bird. Here are 6 things to do that can prevent or stop your bird from biting.

    1. Give Proper Attention–Many birds, especially parrots, are social creatures and need 2 to 3 hours a day of one on one human contact. This is just as important as a healthy diet, and proper housing.

Lack of interaction can cause your bird to become depress which can cause the onset of disease and infection which often shortens their life spans considerably. Be sure to determine how much attention your bird needs and make sure it gets it.

    2. Supervise Properly-Frequently aggression can be prevented with proper supervision. A small child who does not know how to handle the bird or another pet that causes your bird to become frightened can trigger biting. Birds with hawked bills are equipped to crush things, and can cause hideous injury to both children and adults.

So go slowly when introducing your bird to small children, strangers, and other animals. Never, ever leave your bird unsupervised when it is out of its cage.

    3. Re-direct the Behavior-Sometimes birds that are instinctive chewers transfer that need not only to people but to furniture and other inappropriate items in your home.

Supplying toys for chewing gives them an opportunity to do what comes naturally without injuring others or themselves. The hope is that eventually they will choose appropriate objects.

    4. Be Consistent with Your Response-Sometimes birds like to see if they can get you to do what they want by nipping at you. Your response should be to put the bird back in the cage and ignore it. This response should be consistent so that your bird associates biting with a lack of attention.

In many cases this nips (pun intended) the problem in the bud. The instant this behavior starts, stop it. It is important to take quick action on this. Correcting biting early can avoid having to make painful decisions later.

Never hit, yell, or hurt your bird if it bites. This seriously erodes your relationship with it, and very seldom cures the problem.

    5. Choose Companions Birds Carefully-Some birds get along fine with other birds while other birds can become very territorial and not accept other birds.

Before you make a final decision, check to see if the bird you are adopting will get along with the bird you already own. Don’t allow birds to be aggressive with each other. The minute this behavior surfaces, put them in separate cages and allow them outside the cage separately.

    6. Keep Them Healthy-The nicest bird can turn aggressive when they are ill, or when handling them, unknowingly to you, causes pain. Insure good health by visiting the avian vet for regular checkups, feeding a healthy diet.

Give them proper attention, let them exercise daily, and filter their air to keep their air passages clear thus reducing the number of airborne bacteria and viruses in their air.

A biting pet bird is more likely to change its ways if it is happy and healthy. Keep your bird’s air clean with the air purifier from PurerAir.com at http://purerair.com/bird_dust_air_purifier.html
