Question by synchroswim: New parrot cage questions and help?
A while ago I received and email saying that if I wanted a bird cage .. A lady had it and would give it to me for free.. I became interested and started talking to her.. And today I brought it home..
It had been used fir about 15 years by her lovebird that died in December and she had no need for it any more..
It is a Hagen majestic cockatiel cage … 20x20x30
It is a little used has some cleaning needed.. But is this cage suitable for 1 lovebird?? I’m getting one in august and just doing a lot if research ahead if time… It also came with this which I anxiously love :
6 water/food dishes
About 10 perches wood/rope
3 t bar perches
A huge bird stand
Tons of leather toys and ladders
Lots of food
And a lot more
I thought this was a pretty good deal
Although the cage needs some cleaning .. Does anybody have any experience with this cage?
Is it suitable for a lovebird? I’m pretty sure the love will be out at least 3 hours a day so it will get it’s exercise.
Please answer and thank you .. Every bit of information is needed and wanted!!

but he usually calms down after a while.
But i feel sorry for Bruce (our other lorikeet) who we thought was a boy, but shes a girl hahah, and she gets chased around, but then when Lois is happy they are fine. How to i stop Loises mad evil behavior?

Can you help me with building an outdoor summertime cage?

Question by Nicole N: Can you help me with building an outdoor summertime cage?
I’m toying with the idea of building an outdoor cage for my Amazon. I found a book on the subject, but it’s for smaller birds. I need a bird-safe material that he can’t destroy in a second, and perhaps some other ideas.
Before anyone jumps down my throat about the dangers of making your own cage, and advises against it, please, let me tell you that I would not do anything to harm my bird, and am, in fact, going to discuss this with my avian vet at my little guy’s next appointment.
I can assure you that he will only be in it when there are people outside, will have plenty of shade, safety, and be under constant supervision. When everyone else is inside he will be brought in with us.
Please, if you have any advice or ideas, let me know, and thank you in advance.
Thanks Elaeblue- I thought of that, but on some of the larger crates, the spacing between the bars is too much. I’d prefer spacing to be no more than 1″, as I don’t want his head to get stuck in between the bars
Yes Wendy Y, I’ve considered those things. Once again…I’m not going to do anything that would cause harm to my bird, he will be under constant supervision and will be not left out at night either. As far as bird flu goes, I don’t think that’s really a major concern for him.

I would not make one I would buy the largest dog crate I could find and use that for the Amazon outdoors. Its completely safe -portable or it can be left outside anyway, most are stainless steel the bird cant break it or bend it I would not think. You can add in any accoutrements you want to it also. The bottom is open so clean up is easier too!

Help Please! My Ekkie is driving me nuts :(?

Question by Kat: Help Please! My Ekkie is driving me nuts :(?
A few years ago we purchased a baby Eclectus. We think we made a mistake by giving him a child’s toy that makes sounds as you press the buttons. He loved it so we thought we did the right thing. All the other bird toys he wasn’t interested in but he obsessed on this and we wanted him to be happy. He would press the buttons all the time and listen with his ear by the speaker. Then he slowly started trying to imitate it and now for about a year its all he does. The sounds, the way he does them, remind me of a woman whailing or a puppy whimpering. I took the toy away but it didn’t help and for hours each day for 3-4 months he does these sounds sometimes stirring up my other birds to a room of screeching. I didn’t want to make him unhappy but I needed to do something I’m getting so frustrated! I totally don’t know what I’m doing. I read Sally’s book asked people at the bird place. I love animals and owned over 20 cats and dogs in my life but we’re at our wits end here. What do I do?
Most days I’ll see him on his perch just doing these sounds for 20 minutes straight, talon tucked in all comfy. He’s become very vocal recently but only these 2 sounds over and over for hours. I tried giving him the v tech cell that has talking, music etc and so many he can’t listen to only one figuring he won’t play one over and over to learn but hes not interested in any but his little toy with the 4 buttons in my drawer.. Can he be taught not to do these sounds? The only other he says for 2 1/2 years is hello.
I took his toy away months ago.
He has many toys in his cage that I switch out bi-weekly. But I read Ekkies tend to pick one favorite and they stick to it. Nothing like his button toy which he never parted from. We bought other sound toys but he never really touches them in his cage. Foraging toys, shredders, balls with bells, adding machine paper, sticks, wooden toys of all shapes and sizes, soft natural wooden toys. Smaller toys too because I read they like those. Most sit hanging and aren’t really touched.

good on you for seeking help. I think that the eculectus will keep mimicking the sounds until s/he gets tired of them! If the toy is driving you totally insane… just take it away but make sure you replace it with another toy…. maybe one that doesnt make noise? or less irritating ones anyay… give her plenty to do and within several weeks s/he should maybe forget about them and learn to talk instead. I hope that this was of some help to you.

Small parrot supplies? Help?
Question by Kendra: Small parrot supplies? Help?
I am looking at getting a jardines parrot. I know the minimum cage size is 24″ x 24″. What are generally some favorite toys of these parrots? Like hard wood, leather, shredding, etc. What are some general favorites? Also, which of these are the best cage?

or any other reccomendations are welcome!
I understand larger parrots need huge cages, but a senegal is only 11″ long. I got that measurement of 2 senegal websites. Besides, the cages I have there are larger anyways.
Oops!!! I meant to write jardines, not senegal. I don’t know what I was thinking!

I would think of getting a much bigger cage to start. Parrots like to move about and 2ft. x 2ft. isn’t really big enough for your bird. Measure the birds’ wingspan and try to double that for inside measurements of your cage. Be careful on the wood as they need to be treated and safe for this type of parrot. They like anything shiny, toys that are made from soft rope so they can pull at that. Bells and hard safe plastic bird toys.
You are right in getting your bird something safe to shred, as this type of parrot loves to shred.
As far as the pictures are concerned, ask in the place for someone that knows birds for the best recommendation.
Lots of fun times having this beautiful parrot!

Recommendations on how to help my goffin’s cockatoo to stop self-mutilating and feather picking?

Question by gbirrrd: Recommendations on how to help my goffin’s cockatoo to stop self-mutilating and feather picking?
I got her two years ago with the problem. She is now living with a flexible collar and does very well (her personality is actually more normal with the collar on than when she has it off and is preoccupied with picking). Just curious if anyone has any further ideas. She’s got a clean bill of health from the vet, a new diet, and the largest parrot cage on the market filled with toys. I’ve tried different cage locations and increased frequency of her baths (she hates spray bottles). I haven’t yet tried her with another cockatoo because I’m afraid she might hurt it since she hates my other birds. Thoughts?

If you have an African grey Parrot I nede your help!?

Question by iatethelastapple: If you have an African grey Parrot I nede your help!?
Ive always wanted a congo and to my suprise I got ahold of a 6 yr old female very recently. She appears to b healthy but I can tell her previous owners neglected her. When They dropped her off at my house they spent less than 2 minutes. The woman was on her cell phone the entire time and said only a few words. She had previously told me that she was having financial diffulculties and she happily took the 500$ …. cage included! The birds cage was caked with crap and dust. My friend who is a supervisor at a zoo who has had monkeys, tigers, etc told me that it was disgiusting. When we tried to get her out in order to clean out her cage we had to wear monkey proof gloves to get ahold of her. She is so afraid and freaks out when you get your fingers near her. After spending an hour cleaning out her cage we put on the monkey gloves to put her in the cage. She again freaked out biting and shreiking. It does seem that she is getting better. She’ll take grapes out of my hands and lets me scratch her neack, but she is like scared of hands! How can I regain her trust and train her without getting bitten. She is smart and says soo much stuff and uses great pronunciation… I think she was neglected and not tooken out of her cage much….. what do I do?
Any advice on training… I understand the health part and spoil her with toys and stuff…. she has a great diet, but my book on Greys doesen’t explain how to gain her trust!

Oh my word, poor bird.. She must have been tormented.. you are going to have to very patient with her and give her lots of attention… Find out by experimenting what treats she like and then use that as bait to gain her trust… keep on praising her in a tone that is forgiving and loving… I know of friends who had a similar situation and it took them quite a while to gain the birds trust, so patience is your best friend here….

My Female Eclectus parrot won’t stop screaming, can anyone please help me?

Question by pra09q: My Female Eclectus parrot won’t stop screaming, can anyone please help me?
I own a 1 year old female Eclectus parrot. She has a screaming problem. I was told they were quiet birds. She has a roomy cage, I rotate her toys every 2 weeks, and I take her out every day. I don’t expect her to be quiet all the time because she is a parrot but she screams for no reason. Even when I cover her because she is screaming excessivly, she still screams with the cover on. She also doesn’t have certain times of the day when she screams, which I know some parrots do. She just screams for no reason, at any time of the day, and its ear scattering. The only time she is quiet is at night. When she starts screaming I cover her cage and then when she’s quiet, I’ll uncover her and she’ll start screaming again. I don’t know what else to do. She talks, is very tame, and sweet but I need to try and control her screaming. Could she be lonely for another bird? Anyone with any type of parrot experience please help me. I need some good advice. Thanks Alot.
