Question by Kimulove: Question on scarlet macaw diet? (10 points)?
Can a macaw have millet spray OCCASIONALLY as a TREAT.
Also, Can a macaw have a dried corn cob to play with? He doesn’t eat it, he just breaks it up and throws it around as a toy.

Millet is very small, so it wouldn’t be much of a treat, but you could give it to yours if he likes it. It won’t hurt him. I’m guessing that he doesn’t actually eat the millet, probably just chews it up? And yes, dried corn cob is fine to give to your Macaw. Macaws really like large in-shell nuts, which are good for them as a treat (almonds, filberts, brazil nuts). Of course the best main meal would be pellets.

grow feather back on my Hahns Macaw?

Question by Ryan C: grow feather back on my Hahns Macaw?
I adopted a Hahns Macaw. He has great personality. I know that if i give him enough attention and lot of toys that well help. But is there any other suggestions

If his bare spots are smooth there is a high Chance that the feather folicle is too damaged to regrow. If it is bumpy..like after you shave and you get bumps…then there is a chance he could regrow feathers.
Regular mistings and baths, lots of toys and interaction, Try red palm oil in food.
Good luck

Question by ronniesmall: My Severe Macaw is molting profusely- is this normal?- is this the time of year, she never did this as much?
My 3 year old female Severe Macaw has been molting for a while now. I would say about 2-3 months. Under llining small feathers she is losing She gets total attention and tons of tons toys to play with. I notice while I was home from work she makes a whinning sound. She has molted before but not this much

As birds get older they have havier molts. If you don’t notice new pins coming in it could be that she’s plucking. Weather changes and poor diet can effect a molt. To aid in the mold and make it more comfortable for her mist her daily and an aloe vera spray can help too. Avitech.com has a good price on aloe vera spray.

Macaw Enrichment Care?

Question by MajesticWolfRunner: Macaw Enrichment Care?
Im a prospective macaw owner and and I was wondering if a dog kong is a safe enriching toy for macaws or if they will be able to chew them apart too quickly. And what are the best treats to stuff into them. I am interested in a hayacinth macaw I was also wondering what would be the best material to make hyacinth macaw proof out door flight cage. Also I am open to any suggestions on general care for them please and thanks.

I am assuming that you already have large parrot experience. Macaws are very challenging birds even for those will prior experience and Hyacinth Macaws are even more of a challenge.
Rubber toys like Kongs are quickly dispatched by any Macaw, so it would be a waste of your money. Chunky blocks of food dyed wood strung together on thick cotton rope is better and cheaper. It will still be destroyed but is more challenging for them to accomplish and easier (and cheaper) to replace.

That’s perfectly normal. It was probably ready to fall out on it’s own. He’ll grow another one.

Does anyone know how to keep a Blue and Gold Macaw Quiet?
Category: Forum
Question by phoenixofthewhiteburningtree: Does anyone know how to keep a Blue and Gold Macaw Quiet?
I’m having a rough time with my Blue and Gold winged Macaw. He’s very friendly and loves to be around people as long as he’s with me of course. But that’s the problem, it’s when I’m not around. Every time I go somewhere or leave to do something he screams. I can tolerate when he gives a few yells when I leave or when I put him to bed or maybe a few screams while I’m gone but not the whole time I’m gone. Lately when I’ve been away I come home to find out he has been yelling non stop. And I know he wants attention but I can’t always give him attention. I go to school and I’m not always home but when I get home I hear it from my family that he was screaming and they weren’t successful in calming him. I’ve had countless complaints from the neighbors of his screaming and today was my last straw. And sad to say if he doesn’t quiet down I’m going to have to get rid of him. Which I really don’t want to do, but it’s getting really out of control.Toys isn’t a problem. I’m just out of ideas.HELP!
