QUAKER PARROTS ENJOY THEIR HOMEMADE ROPE PLAY GYM
Category: Videos
So I saw this ‘Rope Play Gym’ and just had to make one. My two quakers, Pakita and Charlie, wanted to try it out and ‘demonstrate’ just how it ‘works’. This was not too hard to figure out, as I used to do lots of macrame years ago. I used a spare perch to start the ‘gym’ and then finished it off with a bottom dowel/perch just to keep it stable. Then I added wooden beads and pony beads and made sure there were lots of knots for the birds to climb around and play on. The keets also enjoy it.
Training Your Parrot to Play With Cheap Toys: Tug of War

Presented in High Definition. Our Goffin’s cockatoo Kid Kadra teases our male Blue and Gold macaw Aboo unmercifully. Here he baits the much larger macaw with a piece of rope. Now in a tug of war between a Goffin’s cockatoo and a macaw three times the size, which parrot do you think will win the contest? Precisely! But that doesn’t stop Kid Kadra from trying! Interestingly, Kid Kadra absolutely stays away from our female Blue and Gold macaw Miss Bubba Boy. Bubba after all is the Alpha Parrot of The Ballard Rain Forest! The Last Parrot Gym your bird will ever need! Your parrot gym will be individually hand-crafted and species specifically designed and computer balanced for your particular species (type) of parrot/s. Made to simulate the twisted vines and branches of the trees found in your parrot’s natural habitat, precisely ridged multidimensional footholds are circumfused and grafted into the base of the tree-top. The branches provide a slight and gentle bounce, and the multidimensional footholds will provide your parrot/s with optimal foot comfort and exercise. The grafted branches are ‘orthopedically designed and precisely ridged’ to ensure an easy grasp, as is shown in the video footage. No more having your feathered friends standing on damp wooden perches! Again, the perches on the Rhodesian Elm Tree are not made of natural wood… such as manzanita, which can be quite slippery… java trees, bottlebrush, or grapevine. The wood-grain appearence is created via the three stage molecular process, without the use of any dye, stains, or chemicals, and all materials used are 100% non-toxic. The branches have been ‘hand-grafted’ into irregularly shaped limbs in order to stimulate the muscles in your parrots’ feet, thereby preventing leg cramping and foot sores, which is a common ailment in captive parrots.

Just keep trying to interest him in new toys, try playing with them yourself and make them seem interesting, he is more likely to like it if he sees you enjoying it- some birds only like one type of toy. I had two cockatiels- one played with everything- balls with bells in them, cardboard boxes, hanging toys, wood toys, feather toys, treat toys, etc. My other one only played with wooden toys (popsicle sticks) which she would break and then ignore the toy.

What type of toys do you have in the cage? He’s probably sick of them. Rotate toys frequently to help avoid boredom. Usually birds aren’t intrested in the shiny colourful hard, non chewable plastic stuff. Try some toys that are designed for chewing and that look more natural such as ones made out of wood, gum nuts, pine cones, paper, straw etc. Get lots of various swings and perches. Not the boring dowel type, go out and get some branches.
You can also make your own toys by tying staws, paddle pop sticks and string together. Get a paper bag and put a whole heap of shreaded paper and a few peanuts in the bottom to allow them to forage and find the treats. Paddle pop sticks dipped in peanut butter are good too because once theyre finished eating the peanut butter they then have fun shredding the stick to pieces. Some birds also like soft kids toys to chew up as well as baby rattles.
Also give him heaps of fruit and veggies to give him plenty of variety to eat (which i’m sure you do anyway). Hope this helps
