Question by Tea: Are pipe cleaners safe for macaw’s?
I would like to make some toys out of pipe cleaners for my military macaw. I was just wondering if anyone new if that were same for her. Thanks!

No…if they break off a piece of wire and swallow it, it can puncture the GI tract, causing infection, contamination, and likely death. Toys for birds are best made from natural, chew-safe materials only.

Proper parrot cages will keep the parrots safe

Proper parrot cages will keep the parrots safe
Those who need the cages painted should color it by powder coating instead of painting it the conventional way. No sharp items should have a place inside bird cages, as birds are vulnerable to getting hurt by sharp things easily. Cages can be made of various materials like wood, plastic, bamboo, wire, stainless steel, or wrought iron. All these materials lend themselves to being turned into beautiful parrot cages of excellent craftsmanship. As looks go, cages made of wood, bamboo, and plastic will make as beautiful bird cages as metal ones, but they may not be a good long term investment. Parrots are nibblers par excellence and they love to exercise their beaks on everything that surrounds them even if it is their own cages. In other words, their homes might become fodder for the parrot itself, if parrot cages are made of things that they can peck at, and the cage might start disintegrating soon. So, those bird owners who need parrot cages as a long-term investment are recommended to go in for stainless steel bird cages. Brass is also a suitable material for cages, and so is wrought iron. Lead and zinc are two things that have to be avoided in cages, since both these are harmful to birds. Certain types of galvanized wire could contain zinc and these should be avoided in cages. Zinc is sometimes a possibility in the door hinges of a cage as well, and that too should be checked.
Painted parrot cages would definitely look pretty but paint may peel off and eating it could be detrimental to the parrot inside. However, if bird cages are painted by powder coating with dry paint, it may not do much damage. Since the powder coating system makes the solvent of the conventional paint redundant, and bonds the paint chemically to the metal, there is no risk of the paint peeling off.
While horizontal bars are generally recommended for all bird cages, it is a must for parrot cages because parrots climb through horizontal bars, using them like steps. The spacing between the cage bars should not be more than half an inch except in the case of birds, which are very large. With smaller parrots, if the cage bars have a gap of more than half an inch, it may be big enough for the bird to poke its head or feet out and get stuck in between.
Cages should not have any sharp items, which could impale or injure the bird within. To that extent, even decorative works with loops, holes, or sharp edges have to be avoided in the doors and roofs of cages to prevent the caged bird’s body parts getting caught in between, or getting injured by sharp edges. Main doors of cages should be big enough to facilitate easy cleaning. But there should be smaller openings in the bird cages for placing and removing the bird’s water bowl and food bowl. With the right type of parrot cages, owning a parrot would become a most enjoyable experience.
Shop and buy small, medium, or large parrot cages for you pet parrot and pet birds. All types and sizes of bird cages and bird toys are available for your pet birds.

That’s actually a very handy idea. Kool Aid is mostly sugar and artificial flavoring. The coloring used is very similar to food dye. Kool Aid is probably cheaper than buying actual dyes, and would be harmless to the bird.

What homemade toys are safe for a bird? Or things around the house are safe for a bird to play with?
Question by Mandie Moe: What homemade toys are safe for a bird? Or things around the house are safe for a bird to play with?
I have a parakeet and a lovebird. My parakeet doesn’t really like to play with anything but the expensive bell toys, but my lovebird will play with anything. My parakeet does love to chew on my baskets which I hate. Is there anything close to a basket that he will like that he can chew on? He doesn’t like bird chew toys.

Bell toys don’t have to be expensive. You can buy bells in bulk from places like http://www.parrotdiseperch.com and you can pick up your own materials to make your own toys from typical craft stores. You can also get some cheap baskets to divert your budgie’s attention to those. Birds like to be able to chew something somewhat challenging, like tough cardboards (lovebirds especially), so you can tear apart any box to get those. Just be aware so you don’t end up giving your birds glues, adhesives, or tape residue that could be toxic. Also, toilet paper rolls use an adhesive to stick the paper to it that could be damaging to birds, so avoid using those.
Again, craft stores are great. They carry a wealth of neat materials; beads, hemp, rope, squishy shapes, sometimes bells, doll heads, candle covers, etc. If you can find a way to make them forage for treats, it keeps them busy and is rewarding. I like using candle covers, stringing some hemp through it so it hangs in the cage (along with some beads, straws, and squishy shapes), hiding a piece of millet or maybe a Lafeber Nutriberry inside, then covering it with another squishy shape and let my birds go hunting.
Sometimes, also, since he likes bells, you could pick up some cheap cat balls without any catnip. You can usually buy them in fours for a dollar or something, and let him play with those under supervision.

I know, those toys cost like 5-10 $! Use some yawn, something soft, stringy, and something made of wood. They also like thing that make noise. Not alot of noise, just little dingling things. maybe beads on a string, but make sure they are not swallowable, just big enough for then to hold in thier mouth.

Is food coloring safe for parrots or not?
Question by Becka: Is food coloring safe for parrots or not?
I started making a foraging toy for our Cockatoo…. I sprinkled red food coloring on it and my husband was like
“NO!!! THAT’S BAD! IT WILL KILL HIM!!!!”
So, I threw out the paper I had dyed. I’m not understanding what I can or can’t use because I am getting contradictory information.
Does anyone know what is and isn’t safe for dyes?
PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR REFERENCES
(Preferrably a website…)
Thanks everyone!
:o)
Well that is really interesting!
Red food dye always gets bad wraps… very neat result.

l think it’s fine. For science each table group had there own fish tank with live fish in it. For an experiment my table group wanted to put red food coloring in the tank. All the fish were perfectly fine. Fish breath water and the red food coloring never killed them. Your bird should be perfectly fine if the fish were fine.
