Senegal parrot: Bad habit!?
Question by ?Farrah?: Senegal parrot: Bad habit!?
Well my senegal parrot is being pretty stubborn :D . He has never done this before, he keeps throwing his drinking water (pretending it’s a toy or something) to the bottom of the cage. Like he pulls the bowl with his beak and let’s go and let’s the water drop to the bottom of the cage. It gets the bottom wet and I always have to change his water. I’m thinking of getting him a bottle he can drink out of from pet-smart and get a tub that’s attached to the side of the cage (since he’s used to those things, he doesn’t like to go to the bottom of the cage). But until winter time which is when I have to get it, is there any way I can stop him from this bad habit? Thanks!

Entry from: Sanch Karang, Senegal Entry Title: “A Day trip into Senegal” Entry: “Our day began bright and early for our daytrip to Senegal. With our fellow passengers, Angela and I arrived in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, to catch a ferry across the river. The ferry terminal was a hive of honking, shouting and dust. Cars and trucks queued along every street and people were everywhere, a kaleidoscope of colour and activity. Near where we stood, a couple of women were serving some sort of soup from a tiny tall. They served the food to waiting men, accepting well-worn banknotes in return. Peddlers came up to us trying to flog sunglasses, necklaces, fake watches and other such tat. Locals stood about, many of them carrying large bundles on their heads. Some men herded goats, others carried chickens by their feet and amidst them all, children sold bags of nuts. Suddenly our guide beckoned us over. “We go to front of queue now. We are allowed to do this because we are a tour group.” He led us past the waiting locals who seemed used to this type of blatant queue jumping, even if we were not. In the burgeoning heat of the African sun, we stood near the jetty awaiting the ferry’s arrival. Even though it was only 9am, the heat was intense and so we stood in the shade offered by the waiting lorries. Thirty …

Since new senegals generally sell for over twice that, you might look into adopting a rescue bird. Although even many of those are over $ 150.

Hello. Don’t worry about this just yet. S/he is most likely still settling in to its new home. It can sometimes take weeks for some parrots to do so, one week on average. If they have bells on them jingle them, or shake them around. Soon the sengals curiosity will take over!
It is a good sign however, that it is coming out of the cage and letting you give it attention! Keep at the good work!

For a moment, he seems to be happily playing with the toy ball, but next moment he started to toss it madly out of his territory. So is that Love or Hate? Perhaps you shall be the judge.
How do I get my baby senegal parrot to not absolutely hate its cage?
Question by crys_311: How do I get my baby senegal parrot to not absolutely hate its cage?
I recently asked another question regarding my new addition to the family….a young Senegal parrot Sprite and everyone was so helpful. I was wondering if any of you experienced bird folk know a way to keep her from hating cage time? I do allow her a good amount of time outside the cage as she’s content to sit on her cage or cage door…but the idea of going into the cage makes her quite upset. She will try to refuse to put her feet down when it comes time. Once she is in the cage, she will either squawk or run around the bottom looking for a way through the grate(she thinks she can get out this way). I hate to see her so miserable when she goes in but don’t understand her distaste. I know being free is of course better but she has multiple perches, toys, and fresh food and water to keep her occupied. Is this just a rite of passage for a young baby that was recently weaned and introduced to a cage? Thanks for any advice, I’m learning as I go guys! :)

Try setting up perches so she can sit up high as birds like to do. Next, set up tons of toys to keep her occupied. Mirrors and shinny objects are great toys for parrots.
